South DeKalb residents demand better shopping experiences

Call, email, log your complaints and change will come

Southern Dekalb county is a study in contrasts. The median income is HIGHER than what many outside of the area would think, and crime is LOWER than the standard narrative. Although the area experienced a heavy influx of residents, swanky subdivisions, and retail between the ’70s and late ’90s, south DeKalb has become the neglected stepchild to north DeKalb, south Gwinnett, Conyers, and even Atlanta. Many residents have been here 20, 30, or 40 years; they’ve seen the growth, the changes, the promises, heard the crickets…and they are tired and ready for real change.

Residents are not happy with the quality and presentation of some grocery stores and other retailers in the area. They are not happy with the quality of customer service of many of the retail establishments as well. The differences can be striking between shopping at a Kroger in north Decatur and the stores on Wesley Chapel, or Flat Shoals Parkway.

Clean bathrooms, smiling and helpful store associates, clean, safe parking lots, and aesthetically pleasing stores are some of the items residents want from local and national retailers. Why is this so hard to achieve in south DeKalb? It’s time to engage store managers, district managers, and shopping center owners and get what we want: a shopping experience just as pleasing or better than other areas.
